Data & privacy questions

See our Privacy Policy for details on what Statelight reads from your photos and where it's stored. Statelight has no accounts and keeps everything on your iPhone, so we never have a copy of your data. To delete it, use Erase All Data (see below).

Common questions

Why isn't a state I've been to lit up?

Statelight lights up a state when it finds a photo taken there with a location saved. A state can be missing when:

  • The photos have no location. This usually means Camera location was off when you took them. Turn it on in the Settings app under Privacy & Security › Location Services › Camera › While Using, and new photos will count. Screenshots and photos saved from messages often have no location either.
  • Statelight can only see some of your photos. If you chose Limited access, open the Settings app and go to Statelight › Photos › Full Access, then tap Rescan Photos.

For trips without photos, tap the state on the map, or tap Pick from list.

How do I scan my photos again?

On My Map, tap the gear button at the top right to open Settings, then tap Rescan Photos. You can leave Settings while it scans; it keeps going. With Statelight Pro, new photos are also checked each time you open the app.

I'm on the free plan. Why didn't the new states light up?

On the free plan, states found in your photos are saved and light up when you upgrade. My Map shows how many are waiting; tap Upgrade to Pro in Settings to put them on your map. You can still light up any state by hand for free.

How do I restore my purchase?

Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy Statelight Pro. Then open Settings and tap Restore Purchases, or tap Restore at the bottom of the upgrade screen. Purchases are handled by Apple, so there's no Statelight account to sign in to.

I got a new iPhone. How do I get my map back?

If you set up the new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup, your map comes along with it. Otherwise, sign in with the same Apple Account, open Settings and tap Restore Purchases, then tap Rescan Photos: states and counties found in your photos light up again, as long as those photos are on the new iPhone (for example, through iCloud Photos). States you lit up by hand need to be tapped again.

How do I erase my data?

Open Settings and tap Erase All Data, then confirm. This removes your states and counties and your scan history, and your map goes back to empty. It doesn't delete any photos and doesn't affect your purchase. To fill your map again, tap Scan my photos. Deleting the app also deletes all of its data.
